A slow thirty minutes went by while everybody waited in the room, with Tann sitting half way up on the metal grid stairs to watch Gianluca pull a couple of somersaults.

Marco hadn’t anticipated he would have to go back to address Mother Nature’s call. When he mentioned it, the group agreed to wait in the ship for the following five or six hours. They had no idea whether Kalexis would or wouldn’t be awake when they arrived—not even Mister Tann’nari knew. That’s why they had to wear spacesuits, in case they found Kalexis up and ready to go.

They had dinner in the ship, a sound way of making more time go by, but after Marco stayed up until the early hours of morning. Tann and Reyna rested, while Gianluca and Marco listened to some Pink Floyd in the lounge. He closed his eyes and tried to let go of his consciousness many times, but was too preoccupied to do so.

Gianluca went to sleep, while Marco absorbed the final verses of Brain Damage fully reclined on the leather armchair with his eyes closed. It was then that a hand, a large human hand, landed on his shoulder with a loud clap. Every single muscle in his body tensed, he couldn’t help but experience a powerful adrenaline surge. He jumped up to face whoever had done that to him—aghast at the sight of undesirable familiar and very respectably aged Agent Grey.

Grey was smiling his confident smile, but a crack in his bleached, spiky, and well-groomed beard. He wore the same clothes. His teeth were like shiny sculpted pearls. Marco returned a helpless look, trying to gather up his faculties, coming to a stand in normal gravity.

“Mister Giardelli, it’s nice to see you finally made it here,” he said, widening his smile if such a thing was even possible. “You might want to know Xono is with Kalexis right now.”

Marco was eager to get to her. But Agent Grey blocked him. “How about we sit down in the briefing room?”

Marco paused the music by voice command. “Follow me,” he said.

Marco led Agent Grey down the hallway and beyond the door, revealing the slender armchairs and oval table. He sat down facing Agent Grey. “What are you doing here?”

“I’ve been sent to provide you with guidance.”

“Yeah, sure,” replied Marco, openly sarcastic. “You will guide me to that ship and on to the experimental planet.”

Agent Grey sniggered as he checked his perfect finger nails. He then fixed his pupils on Marco. “Yes, precisely. I see you are well informed.”

“You were an agent of the Eilons—why did the Zigs make you come all the way here?”

“It’s very simple,” replied Grey, self-assured in righteous elegance. “You will need my expertise if you care to survive on the experimental planet.”

“I won’t take any of that,” replied Marco, insolently. “My guess is the Zigs sent you here because we had dealings before. You are a pawn, just like Tann and Reyna—your presence only adds to the show, that’s all.”

Agent Grey raised his thick eyebrows before furrowing them.
